When to Consider Testicular Surgery

For each individual, the question of “when” to consider testicular surgery varies, as the severity of the situation and the emotional implications are unique to each man. It is not uncommon for men to feel insecure about pursuing medical, in-person advice, as the social perceived stigma surrounding sexual organ procedures, offers little to no camaraderie for the increasingly common specialized surgeries and treatment options. As medicine continues to advance, understanding amongst the population increases. Today men of all ages, for a variety of purposes, are exploring options available for testicular surgery. For some men the consideration begins with testicular correction surgery following cancer treatment, for other men consideration may be onset as a result of aesthetics and physical/ visual preference presented in the scrotum.

Immediate Medical Consideration

Undescended Testicles are a condition among the immediate considerations for testicular surgery. Presented in two forms, Ectopic and Cryptorchid may cause severe medical complications if left uncorrected.

  • Ectopic: The testicles have descended in an abnormal positioning. The testes descend to a position in an abnormal cavity such as the suprapubic area, femoral canal, thigh, and perineum rather than the intended positioning in the scrotum.
  • Cryptorchid: Literally meaning - “hidden” or “obscure” testis. Cryptorchidism is among the most common pediatric genital problems. As is normal during the third trimester, the testicles “drop” into positioning, resting in the scrotal cavity resulting in scrotal testis by the time of birth. Cryptorchidism occurs when this “drop” of the testicles (one or both), does not occur and the testicles fail to move into positioning prior to birth.
  • Another condition in which immediate consideration may be recommended is Testicular Torsion. A developmental defect caused by the twisting of the spermatic cord, preventing proper blood supply to the testicles and surrounding tissues. Treatment is usually preformed within hours of the discovery. Often testicular torsion is responsible for the loss of one or both testicles. Testicular implants will replace the removed testicle in appearance but not in function.

Testicular Cancer (Carcinoma) is the most common cancer for males ages 15-40. Testicular cancer is responsible for 1-2% of all cancers effecting the male population. Treating cancer of the testicles often requires the cancerous tissue in to be removed, which may result in the loss of testes, or the compromised appearance to the scrotal area. With a high success rate for cancer treatment, many men chose to have testicular reconstructive surgery following treatment.

    Individual Preference Consideration

Without any history of major medical conditions, there are several men who desire to have a testicular enhancement procedure. Identifying ones self and masculine sexuality is believed to be interlinked between how a man views himself physically, and how he perceives his sexual partner to view him. It is not uncommon for men who are dissatisfied with their sexual organ appearance to struggle with intimate relationships and struggle with a sense of shame with regards to their masculinity. Adding testicular implants may provide the confidence needed to improve self-identity and intimacy within sexual relationships.
